SMSF Statistics To Sep 2024

ASIC recently released its SMSF statistics to September 2024. While it is a quarterly update, past quarters are also updated due to the lag time in processing SMSF funds.

We have added our analysis to the adviser population data and provided a breakdown of he latest SMSF data. The dashboards are mostly interactive, enabling users to conduct their own analysis.

It's important to note that while the SMSF sector has surpassed $1 trillion in assets, this figure is the gross assets After subtracting borrowings and other liabilities, net assets total $988.186 billion. Our focus is on net assets.

  • D1, D2 - The SMSF opportunity is slowing for existing advisers. This is due to the number of advisers increasing over the quarter, muting the gains in super. For this quarter there is potentially a total of 40.77 SMSFs per adviser compared to 40.53 last quarter. Back in Q3 2023 it was 38.66 and Q3 Q4 2018 it was only 20.40.

  • In terms of assets, there is a potential of $63.75 million per adviser, slightly up from last quarter of $62.43 million. Back in Q4, 2018 it was only $22.25 million.

  • D3 - The rate of SMSF establishments at record high -In the last quarter, 10,298 SMSFs were established. Q3 last year, the previous record was 8,514.

  • D4 - Total Net Assets at a new record - Now at $988.2 billion, up from last quarter and also the previous high of $957.9 billion.

  • D4 Average balance per SMSF and by member also record highs -Now, the average is $1,563,729 per SMSF and $841,821 per member. (Note that medians are much lower than averages see D6 for details).

  • New establishments for the quarter by gender - Male at 54.5%

  • Quarterly establishments by personal income and gender - Males earning between $100 and $150k at 27% being the largest group followed by females in same income rage at 21%.

  • D14 - Fund and Assets By States - NSW's share of new SMSFs was again high at 39% up from the usual 34.8% shown annually for 2022-23. This increase came mostly at the expense of VIC, which fell to 26.3%.
